There's a newness in my soul
A rebirth of thought that is infiltrating deep
Into the taste of creativity that is quite refreshing
Quenching the very thirst in my heart
For the perfect words
Or whimsical phrase
To break free out of my membrane
And debut out of my speakerbox
Commanding the ear of the world
With a peaceful sound
There's a newness
A fulfillment of some sort
In the place of the lack there of
Overflowing with serenity
And preserving a secret place
For a peace of mind
Leaving me with a cool like that reaction
But inside a flame of curiosity
Ignites a desire for more
And feet embossed in determination
Guides me into this new era of thought
As I run with expectancy
Boldly jump in head first
And grieve of you not being here to take in this freedom
So we could share in this newness
Feeling so light
The weight of the world being off our shoulders
We begin to dance around the fire like the tribes before us
As a prayer for the rain
And bowing down before the throne
As an apology
For our wishful thinking being so futile
Believing that this state of being was
Was never tangible
Until now
There's a newness
The heartaches from heartbreaks
Have finally gone to rest in peace
And now a more grounded emotional foundation is paved
With sowed seeds of love
Rekindling hearts and stimulating minds
Allowing actions to speak louder than words
So as simple as a kiss to the sky

walked along this path today
trailing my thoughts behind me
had thinks to tie my ambitions to some branches
pour out my tomorrow to the leaves
and bury my yesterday with the root
I saw a lily blossoming out of the heart of the sun
and its splendor poured out like drops of rain
every single drop
a memory
made into a song
just for me
a song so beautiful
i wept until my soul overflowed
wept until my spirit filled the foundation of the earth
and as i looked around
I saw a gate in the distance
leading to Heaven
and thought of how wonderful
it would be to end my journey
on this path
there
to sit about the angels
and sing about the glory of God
how He established me on this path
from the womb of maternal loins
and met me at the gate
and for the first time
turned me around
so that I could take in my life
and view it in the turn of the seasons
but
this is all in distance
and as long as I remain
on this path
I shall see that expected end
I look off to see those
I have encountered
those on the left
those on the right
realizing that it's just me
me on this path
for it's only one
that can go in such a way
this is my way
this is my path
this is my life...

Something Quick...

So, I get inspiration from everywhere and everything AND this came about while listening to a poet performing at the Lyrical Sanctuary about a couple of months ago...He was cool and shouted me out for also being cool :) And, I was there with my beautiful and talented cousin Lilo so in some way I think I wrote it for her because of what she was going through at the time...So, here it is...Enjoy :)

Smiling in the midst of your sorrow
Holding onto your hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow
Knowing that life may go hard like Muhammad and knock you down with the slightest of blows
And love may hand you a locket full of woes

Keep beliving
That sun rises with integrity
Even after the darkest of nights
You gotta let your soul glow
And make sure your curls stay juicy
Because
A dry spell
Is where the lies dwell

Don't believe the hype

Little Island Angel...

So, I wrote this poem one day at 5am while listening to Sade's new album, "Soldier of Love" which is awesome and I couldn't sleep so this is what came about...there is a method to my madness I just have yet to figure out what it is so just enjoy the piece :)

Your dance is like the river
So calm yet uncanny
Your mood changes like the ring on my finger
Once a pebble is thrown in
Only to disturb your peace
The shift of the atmosphere is no match for your spirit

Even the ripples turn to quiet at your feet
Little island angel
Your life is a quiet storm
You've been to the splendor of Heaven's gates
And have tangoed with the enemy
At the lowest of hell's corners
Though you do not prefer the medium
You understand your mission is far from complete

I noticed the sorrow lining of times in your life that like to plot for the spot light when given the chance
And just as the emotion is about to take the stage
The curtains have closed
No need to take a bow

Just the semi-blinking marquee and the moon

This piece is one of the first I wrote while part of BPG (Black Player's Guild). This org on campus was geared to helping pull out the creative gifts and talents of everyday students and give them a chance to show what they were made of. What a great experience that was! It was actually one night in BPG where my love for writing poetry reignited, and I haven't looked back since :) Enjoy!

"A Prayer for Tina"

So, this piece means a great deal to me because I wrote it for someone EXTRA SPECIAL in my life! Her name is Tina Skinner but I always call her TinaBina (pictured LEFT)...she is a big sis/close friend/spiritual support and then some! Her love for the Lord is truly amazing and it shows throughout her personality...I told her I would write a piece just for her and so I did and here it is...Enjoy :)

Dear Lord
I pray that You please keep Your hands over this woman
full of beauty
this woman
whom You predestined for greatness
before the world came to be
who realizes that without You
she would accomplish not a thing
You give her every reason to sing!
I thank You for creating
such a friend, sister, and confidante
just for me
I love who she is
and admire who she is striving to be
this woman
who lays her life
alongside Your heart
persistent in her relationship with You
so that sin won't keep You two apart
she understands that it was real with You from the start
I thank You for her heart so precious
so precious
that only a chosen man
equipped with delicate hands
a humble spirit
and willing to pay attention to her every detail
could hold her forever
with Your blessing
a virtuous woman
who isn't afraid to let her hair down
and her soul glow
so that when the world gets a glimpse of her smile
